1. What is TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)?
Electrotherapy / TENS is a therapy designed to alleviate/relieve pain, ranging from say e.g. muscle pain, pain due to injuries, chronic pain in the neck/back, pain due to cancer/arthritis etc. or pain post surgery, by stimulating the nerves via passing mild electric impulses across the skin, surrounding the area of pain. In addition, the therapy is also effective in treating spasms, knots, stiffness, etc.
2. What types of pain does TENS treat?
- Pain in the neck or back,
- Pelvic, Labor pains
- Pain/numbness in legs, feet, hands, etc. (e.g. Diabetes related neuropathy)
- Pain/Inflammation in muscles, tendons and joints (e.g. fibromyalgia, tendinitis)
- Hardening of arteries (peripheral artery disease)
- Post-operative pain
- Some other acute pain conditions
3. How does TENS work?
TENS therapy improves blood circulation. Gentle electric pulses from the TENS Machine block the signals carrying pain impulses to the brain via selective stimulation of nerves. Also, they trigger the body to release natural pain reliever hormones called endorphins.
4. Is TENS/ Electrotherapy safe?
TENS has been prescribed as a natural & effective pain relief solution by physicians, physiotherapists, chiropractors for more than 4 decades as the treatment provides relief from pain without any side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, etc. which occur more commonly in case of medication. This makes it clear that TENS therapy is safe. HMS TENS is available over the counter without a prescription. With the mild, massage-like stimulation they generate, you can experience instant pain relief (in about 15 minutes) as your sore muscles relax.
5. When should TENS NOT be used?
- in conditions like early pregnancy, deep vein thrombosis, haemorrhagic disorder, tuberculosis, heart diseases, epilepsy, cancer etc.
- if you have electrical/metal implants, pacemaker, etc.
- while sleeping/driving
- for patients who have trouble communicating (e.g. due to mental impairment)
